What was discussed

The session discussed the conditions for growing a fusion industry through entrepreneurship by researchers. It introduced the founding of Kyoto Fusioneering and the history of its fundraising, and discussed the significance of founding the company at a time when private investment was expanding worldwide. The business model of supplying peripheral equipment for power generation to each company without developing the reactor core in-house, and the cooperative relationships in the industry built on colleagues from academic societies, were also taken up. The possibility of expanding research laboratories and a mechanism for continuously sending entrepreneurs out of them was discussed.

About this session

Fusion may sound like an overwhelmingly technical field. Yet Kyoto Fusioneering, the first fusion startup in Japan to become a unicorn, pursues a business as an integrator of technologies from around the world, more than as a developer of its own. From a position at the frontier of industry creation, we dig into the moment at which technology connects to industry.
